Breeder's Accreditation
Breeder's Accreditation

The aim of the Kennel Club of India’s Breeder’s Accredited Scheme shall be to provide a framework to encourage the breeding of healthy, well-adjusted puppies. It lays down a series of requirements that breeders must follow in order to participate in the scheme.

Breeders who agree to fulfill the requirements of the scheme and who wish to be accredited under the scheme may apply to the Kennel Club of India for annual scheme membership.

Puppy buyers from Accredited Breeders will gain the assurance that the breeder has undertaken to follow basic good practice as laid out by the scheme.

The Scheme admission fee would be Rs.1000/- and the annual renewal fee shall be Rs.1000/-. These fees include a certificate and a pack of scheme leaflets and Puppy Sales Wallets. Compliance with certain scheme requirements will be checked automatically by computer whenever an Accredited Breeder applies to register a litter.

A feedback form for new puppy owners could be included in Puppy Sales Wallets, which will help to establish breeder compliance with aspects of the scheme that are not able to be checked by computer.

Random checks on Accredited Breeder compliance will also be made by contacting some of the new owners who transfer puppies into their own names.

Accredited Breeders shall agree to:

1. Ensure that all breeding stock is only the Kennel Club of India registered.

2. Make sure that the puppies are transferred to the new owner only after 8 weeks duly vaccinated.

3. Hand over the dog’s registration and the vaccination certificate at time of sale if available, or forward it to the new owner as soon as possible.

4. Follow the Kennel Club of India policy regarding minimum and maximum age of breeding and number/frequency of litters.

5. Make sure that the kennels are properly constructed and hygienically maintained and that the owner maintains proper and full records of dogs kept in his kennel including history of ailments if any and allows his kennel to be inspected periodically by KCI officials or their authorised representatives.

Permanently identify breeding stock by DNA profile, microchip, or tattoo. After the first year of Scheme’s operation, all breeding stock will be required to be DNA profiled.

7. Make use of health screening schemes, relevant to their breed, on all breeding stock. These schemes include DNA testing, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and inherited eye conditions.

8. Socialise the puppies and provide written advice, in the Puppy Sales Wallet, on continuation of socialisation, exercise and future training.

9. Provide written advice on feeding and worming programmes in the Puppy Sales Wallet.

10. Provide written advice on the immunization measures taken in the Puppy Sales Wallet.

11. Provide reasonable post-sales telephone advice.

12. Inform buyers of the requirements and the recommendations that apply to the Kennel Club of India’s Accredited Breeders and as well as the existence of the complaints procedure.

13. Draw up a contract of sale for each puppy and provide a copy in the Puppy Sales Wallet.

In addition to the above requirements, it is recommended that Accredited Breeders should:

1.Make sure that whelping facilities accord with good practice.

2.The contract of sales should clearly lay out to the buyer the nature and details of any guarantee given (e.g. time limit) and or any provisions for refund or return and replacement of puppy. The contract should be signed and dated by both breeder and purchaser, showing that both have agreed to these terms.

3.Commit to help, if necessary, with the re-homing of a dog, for whatever reason, throughout the dog’s lifetime if possible.
